Abstract
With the J.K. Rowling and Warner Bros. Inc. V RDR Books lawsuit as a case study, my thesis will address the concerns surrounding issues of textual authority and ownership in literary discourse, and also the affects of law, regulation and self-moderation on fan writing. The relationship between fan fiction writers and original copyright holders is tenuous at best. What are the legal and social concerns surrounding intellectual property and moral authority in modern fan publishing? How do online fan communities negotiate their enthusiasm for popular media under the threat of legal prosecution? My research questions will be grounded in an analysis of fan perceptions concerning authorial theory and copyright protection.
